Opensource 3d of course remains a major part of my current interests. This year I’m trying to introduce 3d Opensource into the curriculum of the local art college where I am sometimes invited to teach. The institute currently uses some high end 3d software (Which I think an earlier system admin ripped into the intranet) to teach very basic 3d concepts. I don’t think they even know that you can actually use PLE versions.

By using Gsculpt, Wings, AOI and Blender to teach basic 3d institutes like these dont have to suffer potential lawsuits just because they aren’t remotely technical. (Software is a distant part of daily life in a fine art institution) Also these kids dont have to put up with the ridiculously complicated interfaces just to learn simple 3d ideas like modeling.

I originally set up Painless 3D as a blog to teach my friends 3D through GSculpt. I discovered that very little documentation exists on GSculpt other than Britefury’s main Gsculpt website. Over the past few weeks I have put together some GSculpt Tours here and some basic information here on this blog.

It’s a pity that an amazing software like GSculpt doesn’t have as much documentation as it should. I have put up an unofficial (Because Britefury is a rare sighting!) GSculpt resource site here and started a Wiki for documentation here. Right now a lot of content is duplicated from this website and the main GSculpt site, and it has almost close to nothing in terms of content. I’ll start clean ups and filling in the missing pages as and when I have time.

Gsculpt Marker Tutorial

This marker was made in Gsculpt and rendered in Blender. Modeling time 15 Mins, rendering time 20 Secs.

This tutorial uses just three techniques. Extrusion, Inseting and Bevelling. The Marker started off as a box whose edges I bevelled. Then I duplicated the box, one became the cap and the other the body. Areas like the back of the marker or the top of the cap… I first inset the face then extruded it in and then out again. See?

Just in case you didn’t already know, A Gsculpt Mesh file is a tutorial in itself. Just load it and use the Build Detail panel to watch as the model builds.

Just to show that similar techniques are applicable in any software. Similar marker created and rendered in Art of Illusion using extrusion, inset and bevelling techniques.
